In a week where some technology types asked “Is Windows finally ready for the desktop?” it was leaked that Microsoft itself had fallen victim to a SQL Server worm that exploits a vulnerability publicized last year. It seems that someone forgot to apply the patch. Now, from this we can think of a couple of things. Did they just lose track and forget (which they always whine is the problem with system administrators running Windows)? Or were they unwilling to apply the patch? History has shown that Microsoft has released patches in the past that either broke systems or opened up new security holes. I probably wouldn’t have patched it either, I guess.
