The domain name registrar, Network Solutions, owned by VeriSign, has been sending deceptive domain name renewal e-mails to clients of competing registrars. We actually received one from them ourselves. Although we originally registered “mahonri.com” through Network Solutions, we now have it registered through Directnic. When we switched, we renewed it for another year. So when we got an e-mail from Network Solutions a few weeks ago, we were a little surprised. A careful examination of the e-mail showed what Slashdot is now reporting. Network Solutions is trying to trick users of other domain name registrars into switching to them.
If you’re not sure, go here and type in your domain name. In the text that is then displayed, look for “Record expires on:” This is the official date that your domain name will be available for sale if you don’t renew it. A little ironic that VeriSign, that sells what are called security certificates to reassure customers of a website’s honesty, would stoop to something like this.
